What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a restorative oral appliance that can help you replace one or more teeth that might be missing. Perhaps you were born missing these teeth, or maybe you had them knocked out in a traumatic accident. Regardless, a bridge could be a suitable option for you.

A dental bridge has three separate parts. The first is a replacement crown, and the other two parts are stabilizing crowns. Typically, these crowns are made from ceramic or porcelain. They look and feel like your native teeth, helping them blend seamlessly into the background.

The middle portion of the bridge is called a pontic. This is a replacement tooth that does not have a root system. Instead, the replacement tooth is anchored to the two teeth surrounding it. Then, these two teeth are made stronger by dental crowns that allow them to stand up to the stress of supporting the missing tooth.

Essentially, the pontic and the surrounding two teeth form a bridge. Thus, the name.

How Many Missing Teeth Can a Dental Bridge Replace?

If you are only missing one tooth, a dental bridge could be a suitable option. If you have two missing teeth right next to each other, you might still be able to use a dental bridge. Once there are three or more teeth missing, the two native teeth might not be strong enough to support several pontics in a row.

A pontic does not have a root structure. Therefore, it depends on the surrounding teeth to remain in place. If too many teeth in a row do not have a root structure, they will not be durable enough to stand up to the force of a bite. If more than three teeth are missing, it might be better to consider partial dentures.

How Long Will a Dental Bridge Last?

Dental bridges are durable appliances. It is not unusual for a dental bridge to last 10 years or more as long as it is taken care of appropriately.

You should take care of your dental bridge just as you would a native tooth. It is important to brush your teeth twice a day and floss around a dental bridge daily. Furthermore, you need to visit the dentist twice per year for regular cleaning. This will give the dentist an opportunity to take a look at the dental bridge and make sure it is still working appropriately.
